Title: Hopi Mugs
Description: I made this piece to connect myself to my Indigenous roots and family. I am Hopi and Apache and making pieces like this, and this one specifically, allow me to express myself through a creative outlet I did not know I had! I created this piece specifically because of a recent passing in my tribe that was especially close to my Nana. And these mugs were a gift to her in memory of them. I had a lot of fun creating these because the pinch pot method is my most favorite method of construction. In order to create the design that is on both the outside and inside, I used the Mishima method. For this method I carved my desired design, then once it was fully dry, I applied wax resist. Once the wax resist was fully dry, I then carved the design and outlines into the waxed, leather hard clay. I then went in with a black underglaze over all the outlines of the design. Then, with a wet sponge, I took off any excess black underglaze left over on the project.
